Lent at the Hills Church, 2011

The journey from Lent to Easter can be profoundly meaningful and has the most joyful destination possible. We hope you’ll enter this season with an open heart and the desire to intensify your faith.

In the Hills Church the season of Lent begins at 7:00 in the evening in Wallace Chapel on Ash Wednesday, March 9th, and ends with our joyous celebration of Easter on April 24th in the Sanctuary. We begin with the words, “you are dust and to dust you shall return.” We conclude with a celebration of Christ’s resurrection and the good news that death has been defeated forever and for everyone. In between these two important worship services there lies a host of opportunities for our church members to encounter God and grow in faith.

Hills Church Events During Lent

Ash Wednesday, March 9th, begins Lent to remind us that only with God’s help can we overcome our sin and suffering as human beings. Lent is a season of facing sin and our mortality to encourage our reliance on God. Our service begins at 7:00 p.m. in Wallace Chapel.

Join us on Sunday, March 13th, at 12:00 p.m. for a “South of the Border”-style luncheon followed by two presentations: one from the adult service trip to Honduras, and one from the intergenerational service trip to Belize. See and hear first-hand about the good work our church has been doing in these two countries! Childcare will be provided.

Join us on Wednesday, March 16th, at 6:15 p.m. for dinner followed by a presentation by Rev. Pash Obeng and the Hills Church 2010 Mission Team about all the good work the Hills Church is doing on behalf of the Siddhi population of Southern India.

On Sunday, March 27th, at our regular worship service at 10:00 a.m., our Chancel Choir and soloists are accompanied by a chamber orchestra in presenting our Lenten Special Music Sunday worship service, featuring J. S. Bach’s Cantata #93, “Wer nur den lieben Gott laesst walten” (“He who relies on God’s compassion”). Feel your heart and spirit stir with this inspirational musical program. Our Director of Music John Finney will conduct. Consider sharing the service with a friend who loves music!

Join us on Sunday, April 3rd, at 5:00 p.m. in the Assembly Room where you will have a chance to bid on goods and services donated by Hills Church members. There will be activities for children ages 6-12, and babysitting available for all children under age 6. It’s a night for the whole family! Tickets are $5, available at Community Hour. Proceeds benefit youth service and music trips.

On Wednesday evening, April 13th, you are invited to attend a terrific dinner followed by a prayer and worship service led by lay members of our congregation. The dinners provide an opportunity to deepen our relationships with one another while the services provide an opportunity to deepen our relationship with God. Dinner will be served from 6:15. The service will begin at 7:00 and end before 8:00 p.m.

Holy Week Services

On Palm Sunday, April 17th, at 10:00 a.m., we celebrate Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem and wrestle with the implications of his death at our Palm and Passion Sunday service.

On Maundy Thursday, April 21st, at 8:00 p.m., we honor the Last Supper and the mystery of the cross with a service of Eucharist and Tenebrae in the Sanctuary, one of the most intense and powerful worship services of the year.

On Good Friday, April 22nd, contemplate the difficult wonder of the cross with an Easter Vigil from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. From 12:00-1:00, we worship together. From 1:00 to 2:45, the church is open to those who would like to sit in silence for all or part of that time. At 2:45, there is a brief closing service.

On Easter Sunday, April 24th, celebrate Christ’s resurrection with two wonderful worship services. Our first service, at 9:00 a.m., features an uplifting inspirational sermon, beautiful and moving hymns and anthems. Bring a friend to Easter worship! Our second service, at 11:00 a.m., features all of these same elements as well as a joyful celebration of the Eucharist. Childcare will be available at both services.

Hills Church Ongoing Opportunities
during the Lenten Season

Would you like to enrich your prayer life and get to know some of your fellow church members? If so, this year’s Lenten Small Group program is for you! Building on previous years’ wonderful Lenten series, the Deacons are again sponsoring an opportunity that promises to dramatically enhance your experience of Lent, and could do the same for your relationship with God.
This year during Lent, for five consecutive weeks beginning the week of Sunday, March 13th, and concluding the week of Sunday, April 10th, small groups, facilitated by one or more of the Deacons, will meet in conversation around a terrific curriculum titled, “Learning to Pray.” It promises to be a fun and exciting study. We hope you’ll join a group.
For information on meeting dates and times and to sign up, call the church office at 781-235-4424, or email us at office@hillschurch.org.

The Hills Church Lectionary Bible Study Group has been meeting every Sunday morning at 8:45 a.m. in the Church Library for over fourteen years to discuss the Scripture that will be read during that Sunday’s service. Study materials are circulated among the group in advance, and attendees take turns leading the weekly discussion. New attendees are always welcome. Please contact Dwin Schuler at dwinschuler@verizon.net.

Led by Hills Church member Rev. Debbie Thornton, this hour-long Monday gathering at 8:00 a.m. in the 3rd-floor Youth Room, is a time for fellowship and prayer. Each week, the group focuses on a brief discussion topic followed by learning the practice of meditation together. No prior experience is necessary. All are welcome.
